What to expect on your first visit.

Osteopathy is a patient-centred system of healthcare. A first appointment generally lasts about 45 minutes to an hour to allow adequate time to:

  • Listen and ask questions about your problem, your general health, other medical care you are receiving or medication you are taking, any wider health issues or factors that may be influencing your pain or discomfort and record this in your case notes.
    The information you provide will be confidential;

  • Examine you properly. It is likely that you will be asked to remove some of your clothing. Let us know if you are uncomfortable about this. You will be given privacy to undress and a gown or towel should be provided. You can ask a friend or relative to accompany you and be present throughout your treatment;

  • Ask you to make simple movements and stretches to observe your posture and mobility. Pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere;

  • Examine the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using a highly developed sense of touch called palpation.

You will also be checked for signs of serious conditions that cannot be treated by osteopathy and you may be advised to see your GP.

During your first consultation you'll discuss any health-related issues and concerns.

We will then discuss the most likely causes and agree on a treatment plan.

How many appointments you may need will depend on your symptoms, lifestyle and influencing factors, but we will discuss this at your first appointment and review as your treatment progresses.

Subsequent Appointments 30-45 min

We will assess what progress has been made and follow or adjust the treatment plan to enable your body to function as effectively as possible.

The overall health risks associated with having osteopathic treatment are extremely low. If you have any concerns about the safety of your treatment I will be happy to discuss these with you.

What to wear

It helps your initial assessment if you can change down to your underwear, however, if it is more practical to wear a pair of shorts or leggings and a comfortable vest top, then that is OK my main aim is for you to be comfortable as well effective treatment.

After your treatment

Responses to treatment varies between people and the methods used, but we will discuss any likely effects before treatment commences. Some people can feel local soreness or stiffness for 1-2 days after treatment, similar to that experienced after exercise, we can talk during treatment about the best way to manage this if it happens.

Diagnosis.

Osteopathy specialises in the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal and other related disorders.

You will be given a clear explanation of what has been found (a diagnosis) and discuss a treatment plan that is suitable for you. The benefits and any risks of the treatment that has been recommended will be fully explained. It is important to understand and agree what the treatment can achieve, and the likely number of sessions needed for a noticeable improvement in how you feel.

Treatment is hands-on and involves skilled manipulation of the spine and joints, and massage of soft tissues. You will be given an explanation of what treatment involves and your permission to treat you (known as consent).

Is GP referral necessary?

Referral from your GP is not necessary for Osteopathic treatment although, with your consent, your GP maybe contacted to keep them fully informed to ensure you receive the best possible care from both health professionals.
